COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team scored two goals in the game’s first eight minutes to defeat Ohio State University 3-1, Saturday afternoon and earn three points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
Haley Mack and Lisa Laiti each scored while senior Lauren Miller scored the game-winning goal for the Beavers. Abby Halluska, Kiki Radke, Bailey Wright, Melissa Hunt, Jacqueline Kaasa and Alexis Joyce each recorded assists.
Bemidji State began its scoring run just 4:17 into the first period when Mack found a loose puck in front of goaltender Kassidy Sauve to score her second goal of the season. The Beavers continued firing shots at their opposing goalie and at 7:53, a long stretch pass from Joyce led Miller behind the Buckeye defense and scored the breakaway goal to put the Beavers ahead 2-0. The scoreboard would be unchanged for the remainder of the opening period.
The second period would be a back and forth battle between the two teams but senior Brittni Mowat would turn aside each scoring chance during the period. Mowat made 14 saves in the period but Dani Sadek beat the Glenboro, Manitoba native with just :39 seconds remaining to cut the Beavers lead in half to 2-1.
Mowat and the Beavers’ defense would respond in the third period by limiting the Buckeyes to just three shots on goal during the period. Bemidji State outshot OSU 11-3 and at 8:41, sophomore Laiti scored the first goal of her career during a BSU power play. Ohio State pulled its goaltender with under two minutes to play while several Beavers took shots at the empty net, but the score remained 3-1 and the Beavers earned the split in Columbus.
Mowat improves to 8-11-1 after allowing just one goal in 26 shots while Sauve earned the loss for Ohio State.
The Beavers will return to Bemidji to host their first games at Sanford Center since Nov. 18-19 to face No. 4 University of Minnesota Duluth. The series will begin Jan. 20 with puck drop scheduled for 3:07 p.m. for both games of the WCHA series.
