BEMIDJI, Minn. – Five different Beavers scored goals including four in the third period as the Bemidji State University women's hockey team completed the sweep of Minnesota State University, Mankato, 5-0, Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers (10-10-2, 6-7-1-1 WCHA) extended its winning streak to five consecutive games and earned three points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association to move into fourth.
Mak Langei, Abby Halluska, Haley Mack, Emma Terres and Paige Beebe all scored for BSU while freshman Clair DeGeorge tallied three assists to lead the Beavers in scoring. Mack and Beebe each added assists to finish with two points in the game.
It was a slow start for the Beavers but scored the first goal in the opening period when Langei fired a pass through the traffic and deflected in past Chloe Crosby for her third goal of the season at 16:31. Neither team had great opportunities in the period and only totaled four shots each at the end of the period.
Minnesota State had the better opportunities in the second frame and outshot the Beavers 12-10 but redshirt freshman Lauren Bench turned aside all 12 shots to keep BSU with a one-goal lead into the third period.
The final period proved to be an offensive flurry for the Beavers by tallying four markers in the final frame. Bemidji State opened the period with a power-play goal from Halluska just 10 seconds into the period followed by a short-handed goal from Mack at 6:34, her league-leading third short-handed goal of the season. Bemidji State extended its lead to 4-0 when Terres scored her eighth of the season at 11:59 and Beebe ended the game by scoring her fifth goal of the season at 19:08.
BSU outshoot the Mavericks 17-4 in the period to finish ahead on the shot chart 31-20. The Beavers went 2-for-4 on the power play with goals from Halluska and Beebe while blanking the Mavericks on all four of their power play chances.
Bench earned her second career shutout by stopping all 20 shots by the Mavericks and improves to 5-4-0.
