Beavers skate to 3-3 tie with No. 1 Wisconsin; Fall in shootout

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women's hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with No. 1 University of Wisconsin Saturday afternoon to earn one point in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings. The Badgers (24-1-1, 15-0-1-1 WCHA) earned the extra point in the standings after defeating the Beavers (12-13-3, 7-9-2-1 WCHA), 2-1, in the shootout.

The tie snaps a 13-game losing streak to the Badgers dating back to Jan. 17, 2015.

Emily Bergland, Clair DeGeorge and Paige Beebe all scored for the Beavers while freshman goaltender Kerigan Dowhy stopped 28-of-31 shots by Wisconsin.

It was a fast start for the Badgers after Sophia Shaver took a pass off the opening faceoff and fired a shot past Dowhy for the game’s first goal just 11 seconds in. The Beavers remained calm and kept pressure on the Badgers and eventually tied the game at 11:37 when Bergland crashed the net and poked in a loose puck for her ninth goal of the season.

The first period ended in a 1-1 tie but Wisconsin tallied another quick goal to start the second when Caitlin Schneider scored just 32 seconds into the middle frame. It would take a little bit longer for the Beavers to respond but while on a power-play, DeGeorge tied the game at two with just 51 seconds left on the clock.

The Beavers took their first lead of the game in the third period with a go-ahead goal from freshman Paige Beebe at 5:22. However, the Badgers were able to tie the game at three just seven minutes later off of a nice tic-tac-toe play that found the end of Sam Cogan’s stick for her seventh goal of the season.

The score would remain unchanged throughout the remainder of the period as well as overtime and would need a shootout to determine who would receive the extra point in league standings.

Bemidji State held a 1-0 lead over the Badgers when Emma Terres scored as BSU’s second skater but Maddie Rowe was able to put one past Dowhy to tie the shootout as the last skater. Freshman Brette Pettet would eventual put the game-winner past Dowhy in the fifth round to earn the extra point.

The Badgers finished with 31 shots on the scoreboard to 27 for the Beavers but the Beaver penalty kill was able to keep Wisconsin off the scoreboard going 3-for-3.

Bemidji State will have next weekend off before traveling to Mankato, Minn., to face Minnesota State University, Mankato Feb. 2-3.
