St. Cloud State stymies Bemidji State 4-0 to open series

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- St. Cloud State University goaltender Emma Polusny turned aside all 26 shots she faced Friday to lead the Huskies to a 4-0 victory over Bemidji State University to open a WCHA series at Sanford Center.

Julia Tylke and Alyssa Erickson each posted a goal and an assist to pace the SCSU attack, while Janna Haeg netted the game-winning goal 13:00 into the second period.

The teams battled to a fist period stalemate. After 20 minutes of play the score was locked 0-0, each team logged six shots on net and just one penalty was called.

The scoreless tie extended 13 minutes into the second period before SCSU’s Haeg beat the BSU goaltender Lauren Bench on a tic-tac-toe play from Laura Kluge and Hannah Bates.

Despite outshooting the Huskies 16-10 through 40 minutes, BSU opened the third period trailing 1-0, but SCSU would add three goals in the period, including two in the first 5:13, to open the game up.

Jordan Stewart gave SCSU a 2-0 lead 3:01 into the final frame to cap a nice scoring play. Aubrey Pritchett dug the puck out of the corner and found Brooke Kudirka, who took the puck behind the net and found Stewart on the left post for a quick redirect into the back of the net. Tylke created a turnover under the BSU goal line and found Erickson one-on-one in the slot with Bench for the Huskies’ third goal. Tykle would make it 4-0 at the 15:27 mark when Erickson forced a turnover in the neutral zone and made a nice pass into the zone and Tylke dove to find the back of the net.

Bench finished the game making 14 saves while allowing four goals. She moves to 8-8-0 on the season.

BSU and SCSU will complete the series tomorrow in a 3:07 p.m. opening face off. The game will not only serve as the Beavers' senior day, it will also be BSU's last regular-season home game of the 2017-18 season.
