Beavers learn WCHA Playoff fate after 4-0 loss at No. 6 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite outshooting the No. 6 Ohio State University Buckeyes 38-23, the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team fell to OSU, 4-0, in game one of its final Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular season series.

The Beavers (13-17-3, 8-13-2-1 WCHA) will now travel to AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn., to face University of Minnesota Duluth in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs after the Bulldogs defeated Minnesota State University, Mankato, 2-0, earlier in the day.

Bemidji State jumped on the Buckeyes early and outshot OSU 15-7 in the first period. However, the WCHA’s leading goal scorer, Tatum Skaggs, found space behind the BSU defense with 31 seconds remaining in the period and put the Buckeyes up 1-0.

Ohio State used that momentum from the late goal to score just 3:30 into the second when Skaggs scored her second goal of the game to put the Buckeyes up 2-0. Bemidji State continued to put pressure on OSU and outshot them 10-8 but goaltender Kassidy Sauve shined to keep BSU off the scoreboard after two periods of play.

The Buckeyes extended their lead to 3-0 off the stick of Julianna Iafallo 3:41 into the final frame. Bemidji State pulled its goaltender while on a power play with 6:21 to play and Iafallo capitalized with her second goal at 13:51 for the empty-net goal to put OSU up 4-0 and seal the victory.

In net, Sauve earned her ninth shutout of the season after stopping 38 saves to become the Buckeye’s all-time saves leader and improve to 18-7-4 while redshirt Lauren Bench earned the loss for the Beavers and falls to 8-9-0.

Bemidji State and Ohio State play the regular season finale tomorrow at 2:07 p.m. CST from OSU Ice Rink.
