Women’s Hockey concludes season with 2-1 win over No. 6 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Jacqueline Kaasa tipped in a power-play goal early in the third to propel the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team to a 2-1 upset over No. 6 Ohio State University Saturday afternoon. The Beavers end the regular season 14-17-3 (8-13-2-1 WCHA) and fifth in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings and travel to University of Minnesota Duluth for a best-of-three series, Feb. 23-25.

Freshman Kerigan Dowhy stopped 28-of-29 shots by the Buckeyes (21-9-4, 14-6-4-3 WCHA) while Kaasa and senior Alexis Joyce each scored a goal for Bemidji State.

After a scoreless first period, Ohio State would take the game’s first lead when Maddy Field scored 1:05 into the second period. Bemidji State responded however, with its first goal of the series off the stick of Joyce at 9:04 of the period. BSU would end the period outshooting the Buckeyes 21-14 including 14-5 during the middle frame.

The Beavers used that momentum to score the next goal at 5:23 of the third when Kaasa tipped in a shot for the Beavers’ first power-play goal since Jan. 20. Dowhy and the Beavers’ defense strengthened their play to hold the slim lead by stopping all 15 shots by the Buckeyes during the period to complete the upset over sixth ranked Ohio State.

Dowhy finished with 28 saves in the game to pick up her third win of the season and remain undefeated at 3-0-1.

Bemidji State begins postseason play next weekend and will travel to Minnesota Duluth for a best-of-three series Feb. 23-25 at AMSOIL Arena.
