DULUTH, Minn. - University of Minnesota Duluth scored two goals in the second period leading to a 4-1 victory over the Bemidji State University women's hockey team to even the best-of-three Western Collegiate Hockey Association series. The Beavers (15-18-3) and Bulldogs (15-15-3) will now play a decisive game three tomorrow at 2:07 p.m. to determine a spot in the WCHA Final Faceoff.
BSU outshot the Bulldogs 31-19 in the game but was unable to beat goaltender Jessica Convery more than once. Sophomore Haley Mack scored the lone goal in the first period.
Minnesota Duluth started the game by scoring off its first shot after freshman Naomi Rogge slid the puck past Kerigan Dowhy at 3:39 for the early 1-0 lead. Bemidji State responded by dominating play in its offensive zone and outshot the Bulldogs 15-4 in the opening frame. The Beavers broke through Convery and the Bulldog defense when Mack beat her defender and back handed a shot over the shoulder of the goalie to tie the game at 10:16.
The second period would be in favor of the Bulldogs after scoring two during the period. Minnesota Duluth began with a power-play goal by Michelle Lowenhielm at 3:55 of the period and took a 3-1 lead when Anna Klein scored off a breakaway at 7:37.
UMD scored their fourth and final goal just 1:14 into the third period and Convery turned aside all eight shots by the Beavers in the period to earn the win.
Puck drop for game three between the Beavers and Bulldogs will be at 2:07 p.m.
