Beavers shutout Bulldogs to advance to program's third WCHA Final Faceoff

DULUTH, Minn. – Freshman Kerigan Dowhy earned her first career shutout by stopping all 24 shots by University of Minnesota Duluth to propel the Bemidji State University women's hockey team into the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Final Faceoff, March 3-4. The Beavers (16-18-3) shutout the Bulldogs (15-16-4) 3-0 in the game and will face No. 1 University of Wisconsin in the semifinal game, March 3.

Junior Emily Bergland scored the game-winning goal at 10:51 of the first period while Haley Mack and Bailey Wright each scored in the third period to lift the Beavers past UMD.

Bemidji State opened the scoring when Bergland found a loose puck in front of Jessica Convery and poked it home for her team-leading 11th goal of the season at 10:51 of the first period. The Beavers would enter the locker room with the one-goal lead after Dowhy stopped all six shots by UMD in the period.

Both teams battled through the second period but were unable to put a marker on the scoreboard. Minnesota Duluth outshot BSU 9-5 in the middle frame but the Beavers entered the third period still holding the one-goal advantage.

Minnesota Duluth dominated play for most of the third period and outshot the Beavers 9-1 through the first 15 minutes but a BSU power play at 15:17 swayed momentum in favor of the Beavers. BSU came up empty on the power play but seven seconds after it ended Mack jammed in a rebound to put the Beavers up 2-0 with 3:36 to play. UMD pulled its goaltender at 1:50 and at 1:04 Wright found space behind the Bulldog defense for the empty-net goal to seal the 3-0 victory.

The Beavers held the league’s top power play to 0-for-2 in the game but were 0-for-2 in both of their chances.

Bemidji State will be reseeded in the Final Faceoff as the fourth seed and will face one seed Wisconsin Saturday, March 3 to determine a spot in the championship. The Beavers and Badgers are set to face-off at 2:07 p.m. from Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.
