Early start leads Beavers to 2-1 win over Bulldogs

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team used two goals in the first period to outlast University of Minnesota Duluth, 2-1, in the series finale Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers (2-7-1, 1-5-0 WCHA) ended a seven-game losing skid to pick up their first win in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play.

Bemidji State opened the scoring 5:25 into the first period when Abby Halluska found the back of the net for her second goal of the season. The Beavers the responded 10 minutes later when freshman defender Tina Kamp scored the first goal of her collegiate career at 15:37 of the frame. Minnesota Duluth answered before the period’s end when Naomi Rogge found herself on a breakaway and scored to pull the Bulldogs within one with just seven seconds remaining.

The second and third periods would be dominated by the Beavers’ defense and senior goaltender Erin Deters. The Beavers allowed just 11 shots over the two periods and Deters stopped all of them to earn her first win of the season and improve to 1-4-1 on the season.

Deters finished with 17 saves in the game allowing just the one goal while her counterpart, Jessica Convery, allowed two goals on 28 shots by the Beavers.

Haley Mack, Alexis Joyce, Clair DeGeorge and Emma Terres each picked up assists in the game. Joyce now ties for third on BSU’s all-time points list for defensemen, tying Ivana Bilic with 61 career points.

Bemidji State will have next weekend off of play before returning to action to face Minnesota Duluth again on Nov. 6 in part of the U.S. Hall of Fame Game benefiting Matt Olson and his family.
