BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team wished for a better start to the 2018-19 season and opened the season by falling to No.1 Clarkson University, 5-1 at Sanford Center Friday night. The Beavers (0-1-0, 0-0-0) held the two-time defending national champions scoreless after the first period but a three-goal second period propelled the Golden Knights (1-0-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) to the 5-1 victory.
Bemidji State scored its lone tally in the game when sophomore Paige Beebe deflected a shot by junior Jacqueline Kaasa and in at 12:57 of the second period while on the power play.
The Beavers came out with energy to start the season and out-shot the No. 1 Golden Knights 8-6 in the opening period. However, All-American goaltender Kassidy Sauve was strong in net and held BSU off the scoreboard after the first 20 minutes.
Bemidji State carried that momentum into the next period and fired 12 shots on net during the period but it would be the Golden Knights who found the back of the net first when Kelly Mariani put one past redshirt sophomore Lauren Bench 6:07 into the second. Michaela Pejzlova and the Golden Knights would score just 3:18 later to make it 2-0. BSU then responded with Beebe’s goal just 1:32 later but after a diving save by Sauve and odd-man rush Ella Shelton pushed Clarkson’s lead back to two with 3:38 remaining in the period.
Clarkson would go on to score two power-play goals in the third period from Pejzlova and Cassidy Vinkley to earn the 5-1 victory despite being heavily out-shot in the period.
Bemidji State totaled 30 shots in the game compared to just 14 by the Golden Knights but Sauve was excellent in net to keep the Beavers to just one while and earned 29 saves.
The Beavers went 1-3 on the power play but came up empty on the penalty kill after CU capitalized on both of its extra-attacker chances.
The Beavers and Golden Knights close out the season-opening series tomorrow afternoon when both teams clash at 3:07 p.m. at the Sanford Center.
