Kohtala scores late to tie Bemidji State, Reed wins game in overtime

BEMIDJI, Minn. -The Bemidji State soccer team dominated Minnesota State University Moorhead for 89:44 Sunday afternoon at BSU Soccer Field.

Unfortunately for the Beavers, there are 90 minutes in a soccer match.

Bemidji State held a 1-0 lead after Kim Sorteberg (Anoka, Minn.) notched a goal in the 25th minute after a nice pass from Jamie Ford (Edina, Minn.), and neither team was able to find the net for nearly the rest of the game.

That was until a foul was called on BSU close to the Beaver net that could have gone either way with less than a minute to play in the game.

Laura Kohtala took the free kick and the ball sailed just over the outstretched arms of Bemidji State goalkeeper Jessica Meath (Jr., Bethel, Minn.) and into the net for the equalizer with just 16 seconds remaining in the contest.

The Dragons carried that momentum into the extra session, and Jena Reed scored the game-winning goal off an assist by Tricia Vanyo.

Meath was attempting to secure the loose ball when Vanyo ran into her in front of the net, knocking her to the ground. Reed shot the ball into the open net in the 95th minute, ending the hopes of the Beavers coming away victorious on Senior Day and giving MSU Moorhead (7-7-0, 2-1-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) the 2-1 overtime victory.

Sorteberg’s goal was her second of the season and the second of her career. She now has four points and is just behind Ford in scoring, who now has six points this season.

She and Christina Hicks (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) had five shots apiece to lead the Beavers. Ford, Jessica Ploeger (Sr., Ramsey, Minn.) and Lauren Olivares (Jr., El Paso, Texas) all had three shots.

Meath had four saves against the Dragons and nearly notched a shutout before giving up the two late goals. Alison Wanner and Andrea Pearson combined for 14 saves with Wanner giving up the one BSU goal.

The loss for Bemidji State (6-6-2, 2-1-1 NSIC) stung that much more considering it was Senior Day for the Beavers, who held a short ceremony before the contest to honor and congratulate seniors Hicks, Ploeger, Megan Wallner (Bemidji, Minn.), Emily Prall (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Sara Susick (Blaine, Minn.).

The Beavers will look to rebound next weekend (Oct. 13-14) when they travel to play a non-conference matchup against Jamestown College and then they have an NSIC matchup at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

NOTES: BSU outshot MSUM 25-15...Bemidji State had more corner kicks 5-1...Moorhead was called for 14 fouls to BSU’s 9...Ashlee Ellefsen’s (Fr., Hugo, Minn.) point-scoring streak of four games was snapped when she went scoreless Sunday against MSUM.
