Thursday, August 23, 2007
BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University soccer team opens its 2007 season playing host to the annual Holiday Inn Express Fall Tournament Aug. 24 and 26.

The four teams playing in the tournament are Bemidji State, the University of Minnesota-Crookston, Augustana College and Northern Michigan University.

The Beavers’ first opponent will be Northern Michigan, and the two teams will meet at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at the BSU soccer field. Crookston will play host to Augustana, with the game-time also being 1 p.m. on Aug. 24.

Both games on Sunday, Aug. 26, will be played at the BSU soccer field. Northern Michigan will play Crookston at noon and Bemidji will play Augustana at 3 p.m.

“This tournament will be a good measuring stick for us because Northern Michigan and Augustana are both strong teams,” BSU coach Jim Stone said. “They are going to expose us a little bit and we’re going to learn some things about ourselves. We are going to learn maybe a weakness that we didn’t think we had, and we might also find a few strengths that we didn’t know that we had.

“I think these games will help prepare us for conference play and get us ready for that part of the season.”

This will be the fifth all-time meeting between Bemidji State and Northern Michigan, with the Wildcats owning a 4-0 record against the Beavers.

This will be just the third meeting between Bemidji State and Augustana, with each team having one win in the series. The two teams last met Sept. 12, 2004, with the Beavers prevailing 1-0.
