ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has named freshman midfielder Tiffany VanHaaften (Chaska, Minn.) as the Defensive Player of the Week for games played from Sept. 21-27.
VanHaaften had a breakout weekend scoring her first collegiate goals, while also providing an invaluable service in the backfield for the Beavers.
As a holding mid, her efforts on defense helped limit the amount of shots on goal allowed for the entire weekend to just five. She scored the game-winning goal on Friday at Crookston, while notching an amazing header on Sunday at Moorhead.
The goal on Friday was scored as she put the ball on net from 25 yards out, beating the Crookston keeper. On Sunday her goal came as she made a run inside the 18-yard box receiving a pass from an outside back, heading it past the Moorhead goalie.
VanHaaften is the first freshman to win a Player of the Week award for the Bemidji State soccer team.
