Soccer releases 2011 schedule
BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University soccer team has announced the finalized schedule for the upcoming season. The 2011 campaign features five nonconference tilts, including one against regional opponent Colorado School of Mines.

A strong nonconference schedule is essential to prepare for the rigors of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games. The Beavers start off first with an exhibition game against Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. Aug. 27. In the first weekend of September, Bemidji State will then head out to Michigan against two Division II opponents in Michigan Tech University (Sept. 3) and Northern Michigan University (Sept. 4). Following up the next weekend, BSU play against Colorado School of Mines in Duluth, Minn. Sept. 9, followed by a trip to future NSIC member Minot State University Sept. 11. The games against Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan will also have implications on the regional rankings for the Beavers.

“The nonconference gets us ready for conference play which is the most important aspect and the goal of those games,” said head coach Jim Stone. “It also allows us to gain some regional points and maybe put ourselves in a good position later in the season if we have a good year. While that aspect is nice, it will be challenging since all four of those games are on the road.”

The Beavers will continue on the road when the NSIC schedule starts and will finish the month of September without a single home game. The weekend of Sept. 17-18 sees the Beavers traveling to the University of Minnesota, Crookston and Minnesota State University Moorhead, respectively. Bemidji State will then travel to Upper Iowa University and Winona State University over the Sept. 24-25 weekend.

“It’s one of the toughest schedules we’ve had,” commented Stone. “The positive side to the schedule is where all the home games lie. We would have liked to have some home games early, but its ideal from the standpoint that we should be well rested in the last half of the season.”

The 2011 home opener will be against St. Cloud State University on Saturday Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. Following up the next day at home, the Beavers will play host to Concordia University, St. Paul at 1 p.m.

Bemidji State will go on one final road trip before ending the season with a six-game homestand. Over the Oct. 8-9 weekend, BSU will head out to the Dakotas for games against University of Mary and Northern State University. Matches against Augustana and Wayne State College mark the Oct. 15-16 weekend. Bemidji State will then get a rematch against the team that ended its 2011 season in the semifinals of the NSIC Tournament, hosting University Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. The Beavers will then play Minot State for one last nonconference game on Oct. 23.

The final regular season weekend features BSU hosting Minnesota State University, Mankato on Oct. 29 followed up by senior day against Southwest Minnesota State University.

The first round of the NSIC playoffs are scheduled for Wednesday Nov. 2, with the semifinals on Nov. 4 and the championship on Nov. 6. As always the higher seeds will host the first round, with the highest seed remaining hosting both semifinals and the final.

The Beavers are coming off one of their most successful seasons in school history. Finishing with a 14-4-1 overall record and a 9-3-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record, the 2010 squad set program records for the most wins in single season and fewest goals allowed in a season (16).

Bemidji State returns nine players with starting experience from last season including, the entire midfield, and back line. The returning seniors for next year will be goalkeeper Abby Kjonaas (Fargo, N.D.), defenders Kathryn Bjorge (Prior Lake, Minn.), Brianna Duff (Ramsey, Minn.) and Kelly Pointon (Woodbury, Minn.), midfielders Kari McAllen (Fargo, N.D.) and Bri Scanlan (East Grand Forks, Minn.), and forwards Bethany Fluto (Bemdiji, Minn.) and Kirsten Erickson (Coon Rapids, Minn.). Kjonaas, Pointon, Duff, and McAllen will be the captains for the upcoming 2011 season
