Bemidji State gains first win of 2011 in overtime
MINOT, N.D. -- The Bemidji State University soccer team got an overtime goal from Kirsten Erickson (Sr., F, Coon Rapids, Minn.) to earn a 2-1 victory Sunday at Minot State University’s Herb Parker Stadium in Minot, N.D.

The win was the first of the season for the Beavers and snapped a three-game losing skid.

After finding themselves in an early hole in each of their first three games of 2011, the Beavers struck first Sunday.  Newcomer Mary O’Brien (Fr., F, Maplewood, Minn.) took a pass from senior Bri Scanlan (F/M, East Grand Forks, Minn.) in the sixth minute and broke loose from the pack to score her first collegiate goal.  It was the Beavers’ first shot of the game.

Bemidji State took the 1-0 lead into halftime, despite being out shot 7-4 in the first half.

Minot State evened the score, 1-1, just 65 seconds into the second half when Chantal Paradis floated a free kick just over the reach of BSU goalkeeper Abby Kjonaas (Sr., Fargo, Minn.) for her first goal of the year.

The teams played the final 43 minutes of regulation without a goal, but in the third minute of overtime, Erickson got behind the MSU backline on a breakaway and beat the Minot goaltender for her team-leading second goal of the season and her first career game-winner.

The Beavers were out shot 14-8 but held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Kjonaas made four saves in 92:21 and allowed one goal in the win.  She moves to 1-3 on the season.

Bemidji State, now 1-3, open the 2011 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) season next weekend as it continues its eight-game road swing with a trip west to Crookston, Minn. and Moorhead, Minn.  Saturday, the Beavers will face the University of Minnesota, Crookston in a  1 p.m. start from the UMC Soccer Field.  The following afternoon, Minnesota State University, Moorhead will host BSU for a 1 p.m. match at Alex Nemzek Soccer Field in Moorhead, Minn.

Bemidji State University, located in Bemidji, Minn., is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
