Erickson and Rongstad garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University athletes Kirsten Erickson (Sr., F, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Lance Rongstad (Jr., QB, Eleva Wis.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Sept. 5-11.

Erickson scored a goal to earn the Bemidji State soccer team a 2-1, overtime victory Sunday at Minot State University’s Herb Parker Stadium. The goal came in the third minute of overtime to break a 1-1 deadlock and lift the Beavers to their first victory of the young season. The senior’s team-leading second goal of the season doubles her goal-scoring total of a year ago and counts as her first collegiate game-winner.  BSU also fell to Colorado School of Mines Friday, 5-0.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection is the first of Erickson’s career and marks the first occasion a member of the BSU soccer team has been recognized during the 2011-12 campaign.

Rongstad led the Bemidji State football team to a 30-27 overtime road upset of No. 16 Augustana College Sept. 10, posting 203 yards and two touchdowns through the air and a team-best 64 rushing yards with one touchdown. The second touchdown he threw was the game-winning score from the five yard line in overtime, after he rushed for 20 yards in two plays to get the Beavers to the Augie five. He went 17-for-31 (55%) with one interception. He connected with tight end Brian Leonhardt (Jr., TE, Blaine, Minn.) six times for 129 yards, making Leonhardt the first BSU player to record more than 100 receiving yards in a game since 2008. Rongstad established career-highs in yards passing, passing touchdowns and touchdowns scored.

Rongstad’s award marks the second of the 2011-12 season for a member of the BSU football team.  He follows Brody Scheff (Sr., S, Waconia, Minn.), who earned the award last week.

Bemidji State, now 1-3, open the 2011 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) season next weekend as it continues its eight-game road swing with a trip west to Crookston, Minn. and Moorhead, Minn.  Saturday, the Beavers will face the University of Minnesota, Crookston in a  1 p.m. start from the UMC Soccer Field.  The following afternoon, Minnesota State University Moorhead will host BSU for a 1 p.m. match at Alex Nemzek Soccer Field in Moorhead, Minn.

The Bemidji State football team (2-0; 1-0 NSIC) returns to Chet Anderson Stadium this weekend and will host Southwest Minnesota State University in the team’s 15th Annual Shrine Game.  Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
