Beavers earn NSIC/US Bank Tournament berth
BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University soccer team’s 2011 regular season came to an end Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Southwest Minnesota State University, but a 1-0-1 weekend earned the Beavers a berth into the 2011 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC)/ US Bank Soccer Tournament.

Bemidji State, now 8-7-3 overall and 6-4-3 in conference play, completed the regular season tied for sixth place with Augustana College (10-8-0; 7-6-0) and Upper Iowa (8-7-3; 6-4-3).  Augustana won the first tie-breaker and took the sixth seed due to owning the largest goal differential.  BSU claimed the seventh seed by virtue of head-to-head competition, the Beavers won a 1-0 overtime victory at Upper Iowa Oct. 24., leaving UIU with the eighth and final spot in this year’s postseason event.

With the tournament field set, the seventh seeded Beavers will travel to Minnesota State, which locked up the second seed with a 13-2-3 overall record and a 10-1-2 mark in NSIC play.

The Beavers and Mavericks tied their only previous meeting this season, 0-0 in two overtimes, Saturday at the BSU Soccer Complex.

The Beavers make their third consecutive appearance in the conference tournament.  

Since taking over the program in the fall of 2002, head coach Jim Stone’s teams have made the eight-team NSIC tournament in seven of 10 seasons.  

Stone-coached teams at BSU are 3-6-2 all-time in postseason play with each of the ties decided by a shootout.

The Beavers' quarterfinal match up with the Mavericks is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at The Pitch at Gage Towers in Mankato, Minn.  The winner will advance to the semifinal round hosted by the highest remaining team Friday with the championship set for 1 p.m. a the semifinal location.

The winner of the 2011 NSIC/US Bank Women’s Soccer Tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Central Regional Tournament set for Nov. 11-13.
