Bemidji State soccer fall training camp set to begin Aug. 19

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University begins preparations for the 2013 campaign Monday at the BSU Soccer Field.

With the staff and many veteran players just four days removed from an international trip to Costa Rica, Jim Stone, who is in 12th season at the helm of the BSU soccer program, will assemble his entire 2013 roster Monday to officially begin his fall training camp and kick start the 2013 season.

Included in the mix of 12 training sessions are three scrimmages, while training camp concludes with the program’s annual Alumni Game, Sunday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m.

Stone welcomes into the fold eight incoming freshman, while 21 players return to BSU for another season of Beaver Soccer, highlighted by Mary O’Brien (Jr., F, Maplewood, Minn.) and Samantha Lumberg (Sr., D, Woodbury, Minn.), who were recently named 2013 NSIC Players to Watch after earning All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Team and NSCAA/Continental Tire Women’s NCAA Division II All-Central Region honors to cap the 2012 season.

Bemidji State, which was slotted sixth in the 2013 NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, is coming off a 2012 campaign during which it posted a 10-7-2 overall record and a 8-5-2 mark in NSIC play to finish sixth in the final league standings. Stone and the Beavers earned a berth into the 2012 NSIC postseason, but were ousted in the first round my Upper Iowa University, 1-0.

The Beavers officially open the 2013 playing season Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. when they host Missouri Western State University for a nonconference affair. The match begins BSU’s 18-game regular-season schedule and is slated to be the first soccer game ever played at BSU’s Chet Anderson Stadium, which is currently undergoing a surface renovation to install field turf.
