BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) -- Abigail Nyquist (So., D, Golden Valley, Minn.) netted a goal and an assist, while freshman Amanda Garvin (GK, Claremont, Calif.) turned aside seven shots to lead the Bemidji State University soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Missouri Western State University in the 2013 season-opener.
In a first half during which play was largely controlled by BSU, the Beavers took their first lead of the match in the 25th minute when Nyquist tucked a shot just inside the left post form the 18-yard box. Sarah Stram (Fr., F/M, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) put the Beavers up 2-0 in the 31st minute, finding the back of the net for her first collegiate goal on Nyquist's third point of the night.
With a two-goal cushion heading into the second half, the Beavers leaned on their back line and Garvin to protects its lead. The freshman goalkeeper stood tall in her collegiate debut to preserve the victory and collected her first shutout, 2-0.
The win not only stood as the first of the season for BSU, it also extended the Beavers' string of consecutive nonconference victories to 12--reaching back to the 2007 campaign.
With the victory, BSU is now 8-4 in home-openers under 12th-year head coach Jim Stone.
The game marked the first-ever soccer match played at Chet Anderson Field--the new home of the BSU soccer program.
The Beavers, now 1-0-0, open the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) season Wednesday, when they host University of Minnesota Crookston for a 7 p.m. affair.
