WAYNE, Neb. (Wayne Soccer Complex) – Bemidji State University forwards Sarah Stram (F, Fr., Elk Grove Village, Ill.) and Mary O’Brien (Jr., Maplewood, Minn.) each scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Beavers to a 3-0 victory over Wayne State College Sunday at the Wayne Soccer Complex. Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Garvin (GK, Claremont, Calif.) posted three saves in her second shutout victory and moved to 3-10 on the season.
The victory brings the Beavers’ record 6-2 overall and 3-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, while WSC fell to 1-6-1 on the season with a 1-3-1 mark in league action.
BSU opened a 9-3 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal during the first half, but the teams finished the first 45 minutes of play locked in a 0-0 tie.
The Beavers took the first lead of the game in the 49th minute on Stram’s team-leading fifth goal of the season and her second of the weekend. O’Brien and senior captain Tiffany VanHaaften (M, Sr., Chaska, Minn.) were credited with assists on the play.
Stram picked up her third point of the game in the 58th minute, when she found O’Brien with a pass. O’Brien stretched the Beavers’ lead to two goals, 2-0, on her fourth goal of 2013.
Bemidji State would extend its lead to 3-0 in the 81st minute when Alex Petes (M, Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) put her head on an Abigail Nyquist (D, So., Golden Valley, Minn.) corner kick, redirecting the ball into the back of the net for the first goal of her collegiate career.
BSU finished the game with a 20-12 advantage in shots, while it owed an 11-3 edge in shots on goal.
Bemidji State returns to Chet Anderson Stadium Oct. 5-6 to host Southwest Minnesota State University Saturday at 1 p.m. in the team’s annual Cheryl Smith Memorial/Cancer Awareness Game and will wrap up the weekend with a 1 p.m. match versus NSIC newcomer University of Sioux Falls.
