ABERDEEN, S.D. (Jerde Field) -- Sonja Barr (GK, Jr., Duluth, Minn.) made five saves and Jessie Voeller (F, Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored in the 104th minute to propel the Bemidji State University soccer team to a 1-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory Saturday in Aberdeen, S.D.
Voeller’s second goal of the season broke the scoreless tie to help the Beavers claim their first overtime victory of the season (1-1-0) just over three minutes into the second overtime session.
The Beavers completed regulation holding a 6-3 edge in shots on goal, while the teams each recoded 12 shots during the first 90 minutes.
Just moments into the first overtime, captain Tiffany VanHaaften (M, Sr., Chaska, Minn.) nearly grabbed the win for the Beavers when she fired a shot of the cross bar. The teams would complete the first 10-minute extra session without a goal pushing the Beavers to double-overtime for the first time since a 1-1 tie at University of Minnesota Duluth Oct. 28, 2012.
BSU opened the second overtime with a shot by Maria McLeod (M, Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) and after Barr made her fifth save of the night on the other end, the Beavers counter attack resulted in a goal to the upper right corner by Voeller. BSU’s leading scorer, freshman Sarah Stram (F, Elk Grove Village, Ill.), earned an assist on the play.
Barr’s five-save performance resulted in her fourth shutout of the season, while she improves to 5-1-0.
Bemidji State pushed its record to 8-3 overall and 5-3 in NSIC play.
The Beavers wrap up their current road trip tomorrow when they travel to Moorhead, Minn. for a 1 p.m. match up with Minnesota State University, Moorhead.
