MARQUETTE, Mich. -- Senior Raquel Thelen was in the right place at the right time Sunday. With the score locked 0-0 and the teams entering the final five minutes of regulation, the captain corralled a rebound off an Ally Smith shot and found the back of the net to lift the Bemidji State University Soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Northern Michigan University. It was her first goal of the season.
After playing over 84 minutes without a goal, the Beavers would double their lead on a free kick by Dani Nelson in the 87th minute and coast to the non-conference victory, 2-0.
Anna Fobbe made two saves in the game to collect her first shutout of the season, as the Beavers' goalkeepers have combined for 270 minutes of scoreless play to open 2017. The shutout comes on the heels of Catherine Arneson's blank sheet recorded Saturday at Michigan Tech.
The Beavers, 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action, now return to Bemidji, Minn. and Chet Anderson Stadium to open the home portion of their season Saturday when they welcome Upper Iowa University for a 1 p.m. opening kick. BSU will continue NSIC play at 1 p.m. Sunday when Winona State University visits The Chet.
