ABERDEEN, S.D. (Jorde Field) -- Quality scoring chances were hard to come by against a tenacious Northern State University defense Friday afternoon, but senior Raquel Thelen was able to make good on shot early to give Bemidji State University all the offense it would need as Catherine Arneson posted her fifth shutout of the season to propel the Beavers to a 3-0 victory. The win extended the Beavers' program-best unbeaten streak to 10 matches as BSU improves to 9-0-1 overall and 7-0-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
Thelen's goal in the ninth minute stands as her third of the season an all three have counted as game-winners.
Desperate for the equalizer, the Wolves gambled in the final minutes of the match, opening the door for Bemidji State to counter. Rachael Norton and Alanna Mattson would capitalize netting goals in the 85th and 89th minute, respectively, securing the Beavers' ninth victory of the season.
Recording four saves in the outing, Arneson remains perfect, making stops on all 17 shots she has faced. With five consecutive blank sheets to open the 2017 season, she has not allowed a goal in 499:04 of action.
The Beavers now return to Bemidji, Minn. and Chet Anderson Stadium Sunday to host Minnesota State University Moorhead in the team's annual Cheryl Smith Memorial/Cancer Awareness Match. The opening kick is set for 1 p.m.
