DULUTH, Minn. (Malosky Stadium) -- Trailing 2-0 after 10 minutes of play, the Bemidji State University soccer team got goals from Miranda Famstad and Allyson Smith just 58 seconds apart to even the score before halftime. The teams would play two overtime sessions and a total of 110 minutes and would settle for a draw.
Famstad's goal came on a set play off the foot of Dani Nelson across the front of the goal. Famstad tipped it pas the UMD goalkeeper Sisly Ng in the 35th minute. The goal stood as the third of the year for the senior, while Nelson collected her third assist of 2017 with the nifty pass.
Smith tied the match in the 36th minute taking a through pass from Rachael Norton to get behind the UMD backline and she fired form distance for her eighth goal of the season. Norton collected her team-leading 31st point on the play as she now has 11 goals and nine assists.
Catherine Arneson was busy, especially in the first half as she posted six of her season-high nine saves in the first 45 minutes of play. She allowed a season-high two goals in the 110-minunte match and moves to 6-0-2 on the season.
The tie guarantees the Beavers at least second place in the final Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings. The Beavers (11-0-3 NSIC) trail Minnesota State University, Mankato (12-1-1 NSIC) by one point with only tomorrow's match remaining on the 2017 regular-season schedule.
The Beavers return to Bemidji, Minn. and Chet Anderson Stadium tomorrow to host St. Cloud State University. The NSIC finale is set for a 1 p.m. opening kick.
