Bemidji State’s Neuharth and Touchett selected for Butch Raymond Scholarship

BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has announced 32 recipients of the sixth annual Butch Raymond Scholarship, which included Tia Neuharth of the Bemidji State University soccer team and Julie Touchett, a Beaver Volleyball player. In total, $240,000 in scholarships, sponsored by Sanford Health, will be divided among selected recipients for the 2019-20 academic year.

Neuharth, who will enter her senior season in 2019, was a key member of BSU’s NSIC Championship soccer team in 2018. As a junior, the Prior Lake, Minn. defender was selected for First Team All-NSIC and second team all-region honors after starting all 21 matches and playing in a team-high 1,857 minutes to anchor a backline that established BSU single-season records while leading the league in goals allowed, goals allowed average and shutouts. BSU surrendered just over eight shots per game and allowed a meager four shots on goal per match. The junior also chipped in offensively posting career-highs with two goals and two assists. In addition, both of her goals stood as game-winners to rank third on the team. At the conclusion of the season she was named to the Fall Academic All-NSIC Team.

Neuharth is majoring in nursing and is completing her junior year with a 3.63 grade point average.

Playing in all 28 matches with a total of 102 sets and 28 starts, Touchett was second among her volleyball teammates with 521 attacks, 197 kills (1.93 k/s) and finished with a .271 hilling percentage. The middle led the Beavers with 18 solo blocks and was second with 55 to finished second on the team with 73 total blocks. In addition, she recorded 20 services aces, 76 digs and seven assists.

Touchett, who is also completing her junior year, is a nursing major who carries a 3.55 GPA.

The scholarship is in recognition of Butch Raymond, the NSIC Commissioner from 2004 to 2014. For over a decade, Raymond led the NSIC from an eight-team league to a 16-team super conference. During his tenure, the league won 13 team national championships while achieving a high level of academic success.

"Congratulations to the student-athletes who have dedicated themselves to excellence in the classroom and in competition," said Sanford Health President and CEO Kelby Krabbenhoft. "Sanford Health is honored to invest in the next-generation of health care professionals through the Butch Raymond Scholarship. Butch's service to the NSIC always prioritized the student-athlete experience, and it's fitting his name be attached to this scholarship."

The scholarship is awarded to one or two student-athletes at each of the 16 NSIC institutions.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the recipient must be a senior academically in 2019-20, have a GPA of 3.20 or higher, be participating in intercollegiate athletics and plan to work in a health-related field or attend graduate school in a health-related field.
