Wendt powers Bemidji State to 2-1 win at Minnesota Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. (Malosky Stadium) -- Sophomore forward Sara Wendt recorded the first multi-goal match of her career Sunday, providing all the offense the Bemidji State University soccer team would need in 2-1 victory at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

UMD set the tone early taking an edge in shots and earned a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.

Trailing 1-0 after 12 minutes of play, Wendt found the back of the net for her first goal of the season to tie the score. The goal was BSU’s first since Sept. 5, a streak reaching back more than four matches and 339:38 minutes.

BSU and UMD remained tied at the half and deep into the second half. With time running out, senior Maggie Hallock set Wendt up for her second goal of the match in the 83rd minute. The game-winning goal was the second of Wendt’s career.

The BSU defense starred all aftenroon allowing just three shots, with only two making it to the Beavers' goalkeepers and didn’t allow a single shot during the final 45 minutes of play. BSU goalkeepers, Emma Riedi and Alyssa Stumbaugh, combined for one save and allowed the Bulldogs just one goal.

Bemidji State outshot the Bulldogs 11-3 in the match with a 7-2 edge in shots on goal.

The victory evens the Beavers' record at 2-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. BSU will continue league play 3 p.m. Friday when BSU welcomes Upper Iowa University to Chet Anderson Stadium. The Beavers also host Winona State University at 1 p.m. Sunday for Parents’ weekend.
