At No. 1 singles for BSU, Thea Kinney was defeated by UM-Morris' Jen Ordos 6-0, 7-5. Kinney was then defeated by MSU-Moorhead's Jamie Lill 7-5, 7-6 (7) in the match for fifth place.
Sherry Kuzel lost her first match at No. 2 for BSU to UM-Morris' Jenn Anderson 6-1, 6-4. Kuzel then came back to claim fifth place with a win over Southwest State's Katy Granheim 6-3, 6-2.
Molly Mayer from Southwest State defeated BSU's Nikki Baird 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles. In the fifth place match, UM-Morris' Jen Holmium needed a third set to beat Baird, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2.
In No. 4 singles, Holly Gilbertson was bettered by MSU-Moorhead's Tana Wagner 6-0, 6-0. Southwest State's Melissa Weber defeated Gilbertson for fifth place 6-3, 6-3.
Kelly Kuntz was one of only two BSU players to win her first round match as she defeated Laura Kuehn from Southwest State, 7-5, 7-5. In the second round Kuntz was matched up with Winona State's Jennifer Wunsch. Wunsch defeated Kuntz in the match 6-3, 6-2. Tomorrow Kuntz will face MSU-Moorhead's Amy Fuoss in the third-place match.
Angie Harrison was the second BSU player to advance to the second round when she defeated UM-Morris' Rachael Mathiowetz 7-5, 6-3 in her No. 6 singles match. In the second round, Harrison was defeated by Katie Katterheinrich of Winona State in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Harrison will be pitted against Southwest State's Katie Schmidt for third place in the NSIC tomorrow.
Harrison and Kuntz also teamed up as BSU's No. 3 doubles team. The pair defeated the team of Schmidt and Webber from Southwest State 6-0, 6-4 in their first round match. They were the only Bemidji State team to get a victory as the teams of Kinney/Gilbertson were defeated in their first No. 1 doubles match 6-4, 6-4 by the UM-Morris pair of Ordos/Holmlund. At No. 2 doubles, the team of Baird/Kuzel was defeated in their first round match 6-1, 6-1 to Schenck/Newbauer of Winona State.
Tomorrow the NSIC Tennis Championship continues in Winona, Minn. with championship and third-place matches in singles action. Doubles pool-play also continues.
