Beavers prepare for three-match weekend

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University Tennis team is set to travel to Duluth, Minn. to face off against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs and the College of St. Scholasitca Saints on Friday and Saturday before finishing its weekend at home against the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons. The Beavers begin their weekend Friday with a 6 p.m. match against Minnesota Duluth. The Bulldogs come into the match at 5-4 on the season and have not seen action since they last played the Beavers back on February 23. In that match the Bulldogs came away with an 8-1 victory with the Beavers lone point coming at No. 3 doubles. Bemidji State will stay in Duluth for Saturday where they will battle against the College of St. Scholastica Saints at 8 a.m. The Saints are 8-5 on the season including an 8-1 win over the Beavers back on February 24 in Bemidji. Bemidji State got an excellent performance from No. 1 singles as Kali Welu (Jr., Pequot Lakes, Minn.) defeated the Saints Paula Beckermann 1-6, 7-5, 10-4. The Beavers return home Sunday to face off against the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons at 10 a.m. at the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center. The match is the first match for the Beavers at home since March 2. The last time the two teams met was back on April 1, 2007 in Moorhead, Minn. The match saw the Dragons come away with an 8-1 win. Amy Erickson (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) scored the only point for the Beavers by defeating Claudia Irina 1-6, 6-4, 10-5 at No. 4 singles. The Beavers enter the weekend at (3-9; 0-2 NSIC) and including this weekend have nine matches remaining on their 21 game regular season schedule before they finish their season by competing in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship scheduled April 20-21 in Minneapolis, Minn.
