BISMARCK, N.D. -- The Bemidji State University Tennis team moved closer to earning a spot in the 2016 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship Sunday using a 5-4 win at the University of Mary to finish the weekend road trip 2-0.

The Beavers improve to 10-4 overall and 5-4 in league play, matching their 1999 season for largest win total in program history.

Bemidji State opened the weekend with a 5-4 victory over Minnesota State University, Moorhead in a neutral-site match played late Saturday evening in Bismarck, N.D.

BSU opened the match earning two-of-three possible doubles points as the team of Shaylin Prout and Deanie Hatch posted an 8-4 victory in the No. 2 doubles slot, while Claudia Bellew and Justine Scheller combined for an 8-4 win in No. 3 doubles.

The teams split the six singles points as the Beavers got victories from Morgan Opp (6-4, 6-4) at No. 3 singles, Zoe Lindgren (6-2, 3-6, 10-7) in the No. 4 spot and a 6-1, 6-0 victory from Scheller in No. 6 singles.

The Beavers won their second match of the weekend, Sunday, edging the University of Mary, 5-4.

The team of Prout and Hatch combined for an 8-5 victory in the No. 2 doubles position, but that was all BSU would manage as the Marauders took a 2-1 lead into singles play.

After losses in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions, the Beavers rallied to win the final four singles matches of the event. Opp posted her second straight-sets win of the weekend at No. 3 (6-1, 6-1), Lindegren posted a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, Bellew collected a No. 5 singles victory (6-2, 6-4) and Scheller went 2-0 in singles play on the road trip with a 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 win in the No. 6 slot.

The Beavers' next match will take place in New Ulm, Minn. April 8, against Martin Luther College. BSU will then travel to Owatonna, Minn., to take on Minnesota State University, Mankato and Southwest Minnesota State University, April 9-10.

The NSIC Championships will take place at the Oakdale Village Tennis Center in Minnetonka, Minn., April 23-24.
