BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University tennis head coach Mark Fodness has announced the addition of Layna Rutkowski (Winona, Minn.) for the 2018-19 season. The high school senior made a commitment to attend Bemidji State during the NCAA’s early signing period beginning Nov. 8.
A six-time tennis letterwinner for the Winona High School girl’s tennis team, Rutkowski has compiled a high school record of 120-34. She is a four-time All-Big Nine Conference selection, earning first-team honors three times. The three-year team captain, earned a Section 1 AA runner-up finish and is a Minnesota State High School League State Tournament participant as a doubles player.
Signees are contingent upon admission to BSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Under the direction of sixth-year head coach Fodness, the Beavers are coming off a 2017 season during which the Beavers went 12-6 and set program records for wins in a season (12) and earned six All-NSIC postseason awards.
Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
