Bemidji, Minn. (Gillett Wellness Center) – The Bemidji State University Tennis team opened their home season with a 5-2 win over St. Cloud State University.
Opening the 2019 home season, BSU fell 2-1 in doubles. A 6-2 win came from the pairing of freshman, Laney Rutkowski, and junior, Hannah Alme over SCSU’s Claire Olson and Katherine Muntifering. In number one doubles, Zoe Lindgren and Ariadna Lopez-Simo fell to Fernanda DosSantos and Jill Kedrowski, 5-7, and in the number two spot, the Huskies’ Sam Fitzpatrick and Olivia Fredrickson beat Brooke Mimmack and Breann Walsh, 6-3.
In number one singles play, Lindgren took the first set, 7-5, against Fernanda DosSantos. Zoe clenched the point for BSU with a second set score of 6-2. Ariadna Lopez-Simo, No. 2, and Laney Rutkowski, No. 4, each swept one set a piece, 6-0, and won their respective matches. Breann Walsh split her first two sets with Olivia Fredrickson, 4-6, 7-5, and fell in the tie-breaker 8-10.
The Beavers host Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 5 at the Gillett Wellness Center. Last season, BSU won both of their matchups against UMC, sweeping both.
