BEMIDJI, Minn. (Gillett Wellness Center) -- The Bemidji State University tennis team posted a 7-0 sweep of University of Minnesota Crookston Wednesday to open the home portion of its 2020 season.
The Beavers dominated from the top to bottom of the lineup and picked up their second Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory of the season.
In doubles, Ariadna Lopez-Simo and Laney Rutkowski jumped out to an early 6-0 victory over the Golden Eagles' top tandem. BSU's No. 2 doubles team Brooke Mimmack and Hannah Alme collected a 6-0 win to clinch the doubles point for the Beavers. UMC forfeited the irrelevant No. 3&doubles match.
In singles, Samantha Edlund go the singles sweep underway with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 5 singles match. Alme slid up into the No. 1 spot and claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory to improve to 4-0 on the season. Mimmack tipped the match in BSU's favor with a straight sets (6-0, 6-0) triumph on the No. 2 singles court. Rutkowski outlasted UMC's No. 3 singles player 6-0, 6-0 and Freshman Maggie Richardson earned her third singles victory of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 4 slot before BSU captured the 7-0 win with a UMD forfeit in the No. 6 match.
BSU, now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in NSIC play, travels to Sioux Falls, S.D. this weekend for a pair of league matches. The Beavers will play University of Sioux Falls at 7 p.m. Saturday and Augustana University 9 a.m. Sunday.
