Buerkle broke her own school record in the 400-meter dash at the Beaver Twilight Thursday evening. She crossed the tape with a time of 57.26, which shattered her previous record of 57.69 from the 2008 indoor season. In addition, Buerkle also placed second in the 200-meter dash crossing the line in 25.71. In the process, the sophomore sprinter etched her name into the record books once again. She broke Amber Bohman’s ten-year-old school record of 25.72 set in 1999. Buerkle also owns the school record in the 300-meter dash, which is no longer an NSIC event.
Her time of 57.26 in the 400-meter dash, provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. Buerkle’s time was good enough to put her on the top-ten performance list for this indoor season.
This award marks the first time Buerkle has been awarded by the league in the 2009 indoor season, and is the second time in her career being named Women’s Track Athlete of the Week. Buerkle is joined by Katelin Rains of Minnesota State who was named NSIC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week. On the men’s side, Kelvin Rodgers of Minnesota State, and Brian Ott of Minnesota Duluth, were also awarded POW honors by the NSIC.
