BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Katie Pettit (Fr., G, Howard Lake, Minn.) and Zac Preble (Sr., Multi, Coleraine, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after outstanding athletic performances during the week of Dec. 7-Dec. 13.
Pettit averaged 17.0 points last weekend, guiding the Beavers to a 2-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road trip at Winona State University (79-69) and Upper Iowa University (78-76). She averaged 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals in 29.0 minutes of work. In the two games she shot 60.0 percent from the field, 66.7 from the 3-point line and 80.0 from the free throw line. In the win against WSU, Pettit scored a career-high 26 points, adding five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block, while shooting 80.0 percent from the field and 80.0 from beyond the arc. Her efforts earned her the NSIC Player of the Week award.
Pettit is the first BSU player to earn the NSIC award since the 2007-08 season and she is the first BSU freshman to win the award since the 1998-99 campaign. This season, Pettit leads the team in scoring (14.1 ppg), assists (3.7 apg), steals (2.8 spg), minutes (30.9 mpg), field goals made (36), and free throws attempted and made (54 attempts and 43 made). In league play, she is tied for third in steals per game (2.5 spg), tied for eighth in free throw percentage (24-27, .889) and 12th in scoring (15.3 ppg).

Preble fell just one point short of tying his own school record in the heptathlon with 5,011 points at the Bison Holiday Heptathlon, hosted by Division I North Dakota State University, Dec. 11-12. He finished fourth in the event, while taking home first-place in the shot put with a 14.96 meter toss. His point total is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, just short of the 5,200 points needed for the automatic mark.
Preble becomes the first BSU men’s track and field athlete to be named Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week this season.
The BSU women’s basketball team has two nonconference games before heading out of town for holiday break. The Beavers travel to La Crosse, Wis. to play National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics member, Viterbo University Dec. 17 before hosting Minnesota State University, Mankato at the BSU Gymnasium on Dec. 19 at 3 p.m.
Preble and the Beavers return to action Jan. 9, 2010 when they host their own Alumni Meet. The event is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Gillett-Recreation and Fitness Center.
