BISMARCK, N.D. -- Bemidji State University All-America sprinter Kristi Buerkle (Jr., Stacy, Minn.) paced the BSU track and field teams Sunday at the Marauder Open capturing top honors in the 200- and 400-meter dash events.
Buerkle clocked a time of 25.31 in the 200-meters to finish first, while she edged the competition by just a fraction of a second in the 400-meter dash breaking the tape in 57.96. In addition she ran a leg of the Beavers' 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams that finished second and third, respectively.
In addition to BSU's success in the sprints, Shelly Saska (Jr., Dassel, Minn.) finished second in the 1,500-meter run posting a time of 5:21.03, Chelsea Preble (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) took second in the javelin, logging a season-best toss of 127-08 and Michelle Ohman (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) finished third in the 800-meter run after recording a time of 2:35.18.
The BSU men also fared well in Bismarck. For the second consecutive meet, Raphael Gelo (Fr., Kabetogama, Minn.) took second place in the pole vault, today clearing 14-06.00. Also in the field events, Brian Leonhardt (So., Blaine, Minn.) stretched the tape to 47-04.00 in the shot put to finish third.
On the track, Marc Sizer (Fr., St. Peter, Minn.) posted a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 16.43, while the Beavers swept the top four spots in the steeple chase. Abe Hartsell (Jr., Alexandria, Minn.) led the way with a time of 10:46.00 to pace the quartet. Dominique Trom (Jr., Byron, Minn.) finished second (10:55.32), Brian Quigley (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) took third (11:03.80) and Pat Diedrich (So., Avon, Minn.) rounded out the group in fourth (11:25.39).
The BSU outdoor track and field teams will be back in action April 17, when they travel to Duluth, Minn. to compete in the 2010 Bulldog Open.
