Chelsea and Zac Preble garner Beaver Pride weekly honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Student-athletes from Bemidji State University outdoor track and field teams headline this week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week awards. Chelsea Preble (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) earned top female honors, while her husband Zac Preble (Sr., Coleraine, Minn.) has been selected for the male award after outstanding athletic accomplishments during the week of April 5-12.

C. Preble captured third place in the javelin throw at Saturday’s Bison Open with a season-best distance of 121-11 only to better her mark the following afternoon at the Marauder Open.  The senior posted a 127-08 at the meet to finish in second place and come within four feet of provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the first time during the 2009-10 campaign that the organization has honored C. Preble, while it stands as the sixth award for a member of the BSU women’s track and field team.

Z. Preble scored 7,026 points at the St. John’s Decathlon April 11-12 punching his ticket for the national championships.  He cleared the automatic qualification standards (6,900) by 126 points and came within 59 points of his own school record.  The senior posted the best time, height or distance in seven of the 10 events to claim the individual title by 1,055 points.

As a junior, Preble scored a school-record 7,085 at the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships to become the first BSU athlete to eclipse the 7,000-point plateau and capture fourth place overall.

The 2010 national championship meet takes place in Charlotte, N.C. May 27-29.

This week’s Beaver Pride honor marks his fourth of the 2009-10 athletic campaign, but is the first of the 2010 outdoor season.

The BSU outdoor track and field teams will be back in action April 17, when they travel to Duluth, Minn. to compete in the 2010 Bulldog Open.
