Beavers post five season-bests at Ron Masanz Open
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams traveled to Moorhead, Minn. Saturday to compete in the Ron Masanz Open.  Despite damp and windy weather conditions, the Beavers posted five season-best marks and took the men’s 4x400-meter relay (3:29.79).

In addition to the relay win, Korey Smith (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Eric Schauer (So., Langdon, Minn.) performed well on the track for Bemidji State.  Smith gained a second-place finish en route to posting the fastest 100-meter dash time at BSU this outdoor season with a 11.12.  Schauer also garnered a second-place finish at the 800-meter distance clocking a season-best 1:55.93.

Rehgy Gelo (Fr., Kabetogama, Minn.) and Zac Preble (Sr., Coleraine, Minn.) teamed up to take third and fourth place in the pole vault, respectively, clearing 15-07.00--a season-best for Gelo.  In addition, Brian Leonhardt (So., Blaine, Minn.) placed in the shot put and discus throw.  He stretched the tape to 49-03.75 to capture second in the shot, while posting a 141-02 in the discus to finish sixth.

On the women’s side of the competition, Kristi Buerkle (Jr., Stacy, Minn.) led the way for BSU.  She took second in the 100-meter dash clocking a season-best time of 12:38--missing a 31-year-old school record by just .04.  Buerkle also placed third in the 200-meter race with a 26.19.

Freshman Taylor Sautbine (Tamarack, Minn.) continued to excel in the hurdle events.  She finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles, posting a personal-best of 15.73 in the race.

Multi-event athlete Pearl Walker (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.) turned her focus to the 400-meter and garnered an eighth-place finish with a season-best time of 1:10.38.

The Ron Masanz Open draws the curtain on the Beavers’ 2010 outdoor regular season.  The teams open postseason play May 7-8 when they head back to Moorhead, Minn. to compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Outdoor Championships.
