Track and field sweeps Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University tracksters Kristi Buerkle (Sr., Stacy, Minn.) and Tandy Juell (Fr., Redwood Falls, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic accomplishments during the week of Feb. 7-13.

Buerkle led the BSU women’s track and field team with a pair of individual victories at the Husky Open Feb. 12 capturing the 200- and 400-meter dash titles. In the 200, Buerkle broke the tape in 25.94, while winning the 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 56.50--a mark that ranks fifth in the country this season and provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.  In addition, Buerkle ran a leg of BSU’s 4x400-meter relay team that also garnered first place at the meet (4:09.95).

Buerkle, a two time Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection in 2010-11 and only representative of the BSU women’s track and field team to be honored this season, has now been a recipient of the award 14 times during her career.

Juell, a freshman on the BSU men’s track and field team, scored 4,774 points to claim third place in the heptathlon at the 2011 NSIC Multi Championships Feb. 14, to rank 10th in the country and provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.  The Redwood Falls, Minn. native placed among the top six participants in four of the seven events, highlighted by a season-best height in the pole vault (14-09.50) to finish second to go with a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash (7.21) and a 2011-best 38-02.75 in the shot put to place third.

By finishing third in the 20-man field, Juell earned six points for the Beavers in the team competition as they head into the NSIC Championships.

This marks the first time Beaver Pride has recognized Juell with its weekly award. The BSU men’s track and field team has now been represented with two Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week recipients this season.  Juell follows Jacob Nelson (Fr., Pierz, Minn.), who garnered the award Jan. 19.

Buerkle, Juell and the rest of the Bemidji State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams will be back in action Feb. 17 as the Beavers return home to host the Bemidji State Twilight at the Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center. The meet, set for 4 p.m., will serve as a final tune up for BSU before hosting the 2011 NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 25-26.
