Bemidji State to host 2011 NSIC Track & Field Championships

BEMIDJI , Minn. (Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center) --  The Bemidji State University men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams are set to compete in the 2011 NSIC Track & Field Championships Feb. 25-26 at the Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center on the campus of Bemidji State University. The event kicks-off at 12 p.m. Friday, with the final event of the day taking place at 7:20 p.m. Day two gets underway Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and closes with the awards presentation scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

The field events will start the championships, with the long jump, pole vault, high jump and weight throw. Track events will begin at 3 p.m. with the mile prelims, while the distance medley relays will close out day one of the of the two day event. The women will see champions crowned in the 3,000-meter run, pole vault, high jump, and distance medley relay. The men will see the podium in the 3,000-meter run, high jump, and distance medley relay.

Saturday will begin with finals in field events starting at 10:0 a.m. for the women’s weight throw and triple jump, and the men’s pole vault. Finals in the track events will get started when the runners in the mile toe the line at 1 p.m. for the starting gun.

Several Beavers are in position to make a splash this weekend, led by standout All-American sprinter Kristi Buerkle ( Sr., Stacy, Minn.). Buerkle comes in ranked in the top 10 in the NSIC in the 60m, 200m, 400m, 600m, and 800-meter run. The senior will be competing in the 400-meter and 200-meter dash, where she ranks third and first, respectively in the conference. Sophomore Raphael Gelo (Kabetogama, Minn.) headlines the Beaver men ranked fourth in the pole vault. Teammate Tandy Juell (So., Redwood Falls, Minn.) enters the championships tied for seventh in the pole vault, while senior Brian Bauleke (LeCenter, Minn.) comes in with the ninth best mark in the high jump.

Juell picked up the six points for the BSU men’s team after placing third in the heptathlon at the NSIC Multi Championships two weeks ago. The Beaver men come in ranked third in the team competition, behind Minnesota State University Moorhead (15 pts) and Minnesota State, Mankato (12 pts).

FROM THE NORTH:

Take Hwy 71 to Bemidji and turn left on Hwy 197. Follow Hwy. 197 through town and take a left on 19th Street and proceed to the parking lot of the Physical Education building on your right.

FROM THE EAST:
Take Hwy. 2 West and exit onto Hwy 197 just outside of Bemidji. Follow Hwy. 197 through town and take a right on 19th Street and proceed to the parking lot of the Physical Education building on your right.

FROM THE WEST:

Take Hwy. 2 East to Bemidji and then follow Hwy 197. Take Hwy 197 through town, take a left on 19th Street and proceed to the parking lot of the Physical Education building on your right.

FROM THE SOUTH:

From Brainered - Follow Hwy. 371 north through Brainerd/Walker/Cass Lake. In Cass Lake, take a left on Hwy. 2 heading west and exit onto Hwy. 197 just outside of Bemidji. Take Hwy 197 through town and take a right on 19th Street and proceed to the parking lot of the Physical Education building on your right.

FROM MOTLEY:
Follow Hwy 210 toward Brainerd. About 1/8 of a mile turn left onto Hwy. 64 toward Akeley. In Akeley, turn right toward Walker on Hwy. 34/64 and follow for about a mile and turn left back onto Hwy. 64 toward Bemidji. Follow Hwy 64 and turn left onto Hwy. 200/71 toward Bemidji. Take Hwy 197 through town and take a right on 19th Street and proceed to the parking lot of the Physical Education building on your right.

FROM WILLMAR/WADENA/PARK RAPIDS: Take Hwy. 71 into Bemidji and take a left on Hwy. 197. Follow Hwy 197 through town and take a right on 19th Street and proceed to the parking lot of the Physical Education building on your right.
