Buerkle and Juell garner Beaver Pride Athelte of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University track and field standouts Kristi Buerkle (Sr., Stacy, Minn.) and Tandy Juell (So., Redwood Falls, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances between April 4-10.

Buerkle had a hand in 28 of 31 points earned by the BSU women’s team at the Falcon Invitational in River Falls, Wis. April 9.  The senior recorded a pair of individual event victories in addition to leading the Beavers’ 4x400-meter relay team to second place (4:03.70). Buerkle provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.69 before taking the 200-meter title with a time of 24.81.

Buerkle’s time in the 400-meter event stands as the seventh-fastest mark of the 2011 Division II outdoor campaign.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection is the fifth of the 2010-11 season for Buerkle and the women’s track and field team and also represents an unprecedented 17th award of the senior’s career.

Juell won the Falcon Invitational decathlon and provisionally qualified in the event with the seventh-best score in the country this season. Juell’s 6,405 points in the 10-discipline event was a personal best and ranks atop the 2011 NSIC decathlon list and positions him seventh nationally this spring.  The sophomore posted back-to-back wins in the pole vault (14-08.25) and javelin (170-09) as well as a pair of second-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (11.78) and the discus (120-02) en route to the title.

Today marks the second occasion Beaver Pride has selected Juell for its weekly honor (Feb. 16), while he follows teammates Jacob Nelson (Fr., Pierz, Minn.) and Raphael Gelo (So., Kabetogama, Minn.), who garnered the award during the indoor season Jan. 19 and Mar. 2, respectively.

The BSU men’s and women’s track teams are back in action Saturday when they travel to St. Paul, Minn. to compete in the Holst Invitational.  The meet set for Concordia University-St. Paul’s Sea Foam Stadium will get underway at 10 a.m.
