Lopez breaks Bemidji State mile mark at SDSU Indoor Classic

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Senior Vanessa Rae Lopez broke the program’s all-time mile run mark Saturday, while four Bemidji State University runners, competing in the SDSU Indoor Classic, set season-best times Friday at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.

Lopes turned in a 5:20.24 to finish second in the race. Her time trimmed 1.15 seconds from a school record set by Nicole Crummy in 2015 (5:21.39). Friday, Lopez clocked the ninth-best 1,000-meter time in the NSIC this season, finishing 17th in the event with a 3:06.61.

In addition, Jada Barker placed 24th among 139 competitors in the 200-meter dash, clocking a season-best time of 25.85. Her time ranks as the 12th fastest in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference this season and was less than a second over the BSU 200-meter record. Alex Coleman also competed at the 200-meter distance, posting a season-best time of her own with a 26.48.

Christa Benson competed in the 600-meter dash, trimming three seconds from her previous season-best time to finish in 1:44.08 and 46th among 63 participants.

The rest of the Beavers will participate in the YellowJacket Open in Superior, Wis. Saturday before their multi-event athletes will make the trip to Mankato, Minn. to open the 2017 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships competing in the pentathlon, Sunday.
