MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University outdoor track and field team recorded 11 top 10 finishes and set four season-best times in the Mansanz Classic, its final tune-up to the 2017 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships. Genavieve Backlund and Christa Benson each posted runner-up finishes to lead the Beavers.
Backlund paced a throwing group that collected seven top-10 finishes. The freshman posted a second-place finish in the discus throw, stretching the tape to 129 feet three inches. She also took third place in the hammer throw, logging a season-best 152-9. The throw seats her 12th among the NSIC throwers this outdoor season.
In addition to Backlund, Savannah Olson measured a 39-3 in the shot put to earn fifth place, while Regan Grube was eighth in both the hammer (139-4) and javelin (93-0) and Samara Tobeck was seventh in the hammer throw (143-8) and 10th in the shot put (32-11).
Alex Coleman also competed well in field events. The senior and BSU record holder in the triple jump posted a season-best 18-0 ½ in in the long jump to place third.
On the track, sophomore Christa Benson led all BSU participants. She posted a season-best mark in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 1:05:01. The Mankato, Minn. native now ranks 11th in the NSIC in 2017.
In addition, Marissa Morgenstern was third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.93 and the Beavers’ 4x100-meter relay team of Morgenstern, Coleman, Kristen Petron and Benson recorded a season-best time of 52.58 to place second.
The Beavers now shift their focus to the NSIC Outdoor Championships. The conference meet is set for Concordia University-St. Paul’s Sea Foam Stadium May 12-13.
