Stewart breaks BSU record in first day of Central Dutch Invitational

PELLA, Iowa. -- Freshman sprinter Venice Stewart led the way for Bemidji State University women’s track and field Thursday in the opening day of the Central College Dutch Invitational by breaking the program’s record in the 100-meter dash. Joining Stewart with notable first days at the meet were two field participants who set personal record marks in their events.

Stewart took first in the preliminary round of the 100m dash, setting the BSU record in the event with a finish of 12.13 seconds. The time broke the previous program record by 0.06 seconds, set by Taylor Sautbine in 2013. Sophomore Jada Barker, with a time of 12.44, and freshman Cheri’A Adams, with a time of 12.52, finished within the top four to join Stewart in qualifying for the finals on Friday in the 100m dash.

Junior Kelsey Hurley also took a top four finish in the 400m dash with a fourth-place time of 1:01.02. Three Beaver personal records were broken in the field events, led by junior Regan Grube who finished eighth in in the javelin throw with a toss of 95-feet-11-inches. Grube also set a personal best mark in the discus throw with a toss of 105-02 to finish 15th. Junior Samara Tobeck led BSU in the discus while finishing ninth with a throw of 114-01.

Bemidji State will finish the final day of the Dutch Invitational Friday with events beginning at 10 a.m.
