Bauerfeld and Nelson garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Annie Bauerfeld (Sr., F, Woodbury, Minn.) and Jacob Nelson (Fr., Pierz, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic accomplishments during the week of Jan. 10-16.

Bauerfeld had a hand in each of the BSU women’s ice hockey team’s four goals as the Beavers hit the road to battle then-No. 8 University of North Dakota Jan. 15-16.  The senior co-captain posted a short-handed goal early Saturday and added an assist in the second period of a 5-2 loss to the Fighting Sioux in Roseau, Minn.  Sunday, she scored her fifth goal of the season midway through the second period before posted an assist on teammate Erin Cody’s (Sr., F, Roseville, Minn.) power-play goal in the final moments of a 6-2 loss in Grand Forks, N.D.

Since the first of the year, Bauerfeld has contributed to eight of the Beavers’ 10 goals posting 3-5=8 points.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the second occasion Bauerfeld has been recognized by the organization this season and fifth time in 2010-11 a member of the BSU women’s ice hockey team has earned the award.  She was also honored Dec. 1, 2010 following a Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) series at the Ohio State University.

Nelson led the BSU men’s indoor track team at the Super 8 Open Jan. 15.  The freshman claimed two events titles, while running a leg of BSU’s first-place 4x400-meter relay team. He recorded a time of 7.13 in his first shot at the 60-meter dash this season and clocked a 2011-best 23.19 to win at the 200-meter distance.

This stands as Nelson’s first Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award and the first time a member of the men’s track and field team has been recognized by Beaver Pride in 2010-11.

The Bemidji State track and field teams will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Superior, Wis. to compete in the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Blizzard Open.  The event is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Marcovich Wellness Center.

Bauerfeld and the BSU women’s hockey team returns to the Sanford Center this weekend to host Minnesota State University, Mankato.  Games are scheduled for a 2:07 p.m. opening face-off Friday and Saturday.
