John Rehfeld takes over as BSU director of strength and conditioning

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University has hired John Rehfeld as the director of strength and conditioning, director of athletics Tracy Dill announced. Rehfeld served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Beavers since November 2020 after spending the previous 19 months at NCAA Division I programs.

“John has been a valuable asset to this department and to the student-athlete experience since he joined us in November,” Dill said. “We are excited to have him take over the strength and conditioning program and to keep Beaver Athletics moving in the right direction.”

“I want to thank the Bemidji State athletic department for believing in me and allowing me the opportunity to develop the amazing student-athletes here at BSU,” Rehfeld said. “My time so far at Bemidji State has been great and I look forward to continuing to build upon the culture that exists here."

Since originally joining Bemidji State in November, Rehfeld worked directly with men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, men’s and women’s golf, and tennis, in addition to assisting with implementation of strength and conditioning programs for football, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s hockey.

Rehfeld came to Bemidji State after serving as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant coach at Western Illinois University from January until November 2020. He worked directly with baseball, softball and men’s and women’s soccer, in addition to assisting the football program.

Rehfeld previously worked with the Mississippi State University athletics department as a strength and conditioning intern from June 2019 until January 2020. Rehfeld began his coaching career at his alma mater, St. Ambrose University, in January 2018 as an intern before being promoted to co-coordinator of strength and conditioning in August 2018.

A native of Oak Lawn, Ill., Rehfeld earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and exercise science from St. Ambrose in 2018 before attaining a master’s degree in exercise physiology from St. Ambrose in 2019. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association and holds certification in CPR, AED use and First Aid by the American Heart Association.

Rehfeld was a member of the St. Ambrose football program for four seasons from 2014-17 as a linebacker and defensive lineman, garnering two Mid-States Football Association All-Academic selections.
