Bemidji State Receives Good Offense and Pitching In Sweep of UM-Crookston

CROOKSTON, Minn. - Bemidji State’s pitching corps was impressive today, allowing only two earned runs in a double-header sweep of Minnesota-Crookston, 10-2 and 8-4 in Crookston, Minn. BSU’s Russ Berner went the distance in game one, fanning eight Golden Eagles and giving up two hits while Dan Wagner tossed four innings and allowed a run on no hits in the second game - he had three walks and two wild pitches.

The Golden Eagles struck first in game one scoring a lone run in the second inning. Bemidji State countered with 10 runs in innings four through seven while limiting UM-C to a single tally in the fifth inning.

Shaun Ross highlighted the fourth inning with a two-run bomb. In the fifth, Jon Czech had a single while Ross doubled as each player had two RBI’s apiece. In the sixth frame that saw the Beavers send 10 men to the dish, Czech doubled home a run and John Grindeland singled with the bases loaded to bring in Aaron Schmitz to highlight the inning

In game two, Bemidji State built up a 6-1 lead after four innings and never trailed in the conference game. The visitors put up three runs each in the second and fourth innings. The Golden Eagles got single runs in the fourth and fifth before BSU went for two runs in the sixth inning. UM-C closed out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. The hosts hurt themselves with three errors and only three hits.

The Beavers had three players with two hits apiece and six had at least one run batted in. Czech led the way once again with a two-for-two performance while Schmitz went two-for-four and Jeremy Mellen collected two hits in three chances. Chris Dvorak totaled two RBI’s to lead the way for BSU.

Wagner was credited with the win while Brian Beuning came in for three innings and gave up two unearned runs on two hits.

BSU moves to 7-14 on the season and 5-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Bemidji State travels to Wayne, Neb. to take on the Wildcats for a two-day doubleheader April 11-12. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. while the double-header on Saturday will get under way at 12:00 p.m.
