Bemidji State drops 12-1 mercy-rule shortened contest at Central Oklahoma
Sunday, March 7, 2004

EDMOND, Okla. - The Central Oklahoma Bronchos completed a three-game weekend sweep of the Bemidji State baseball team, taking a 12-1 mercy-rule shortened victory today at Broncho Field.

The Bronchos plated three runs in the bottom of the second and two in the third to grab a 5-0 lead. But BSU held the Bronchos scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, then plated a single run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Shaun Ross to cut the deficit to 5-1.

But that was all BSU would get, and the Bronchos pulled away with four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. Central Oklahoma took a 10-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth, and after scoring two runs to push its lead to 11, the scheduled nine-inning contest was called short by the NCAA’s 10-run mercy rule. In a scheduled nine-inning game, the game is called as soon as a team holds a 10-run lead in the bottom half of any inning after the seventh.

Tyler Norland started on the hill for BSU and went 6 1/3 innings. He allowed 10 runs - but just four earned - on nine hits with three strikeouts while walking none. He took the hard-luck loss and fell to 0-1 on the season. Norland also hit three batters.

Dave Zothman pitched the final four outs in relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits with a strikeout and two walks.

BSU’s pitching staff was again hampered by a poor effort in the field by the Beaver defense. After committing seven errors in yesterday’s double-header, the Beavers booted five balls in the field today which led to seven unearned Broncho runs.

Ross finished 2-for-3 with a run scored an an RBI on his sixth-inning circuit clout, but the rest of the team combined to go just 2-for-23 at the plate.

The losse leaves Bemidji State 0-3 on the season while Central Oklahoma improved to 10-6. Bemidji State is back in action March 9-10 at the Missouri Southern Tournament in Joplin, Mo.; the Beavers will play a double-header against Mt. Marty (S.D.) College on March 9, then play a single game against Morningside College on March 10. BSU will then make a short drive to Pittsburg, Kan. and play a single afternoon tilt against Pittsburg (Kan.) State at 4:00 p.m. March 10.
