Beavers upended by Madonna University, 8-2, in Arizona

CHANDLER, Ariz. (Snidegar Field) -- The Bemidji State University baseball team played its first of six games in Chandler, Ariz. as the Beavers played Madonna University (Mich.) for just the fourth time in history. The Crusaders pounded out 11 hits to earn a 8-2 win over Bemidji State.

The Crusaders scored five unanswered runs to jump out to a 5-0 lead before the Beavers platted one run in the sixth inning. MU pushed its lead to 8-1 as they pushed three more runs across in the seventh inning. Bemidji State tried to mount a comeback in the ninth inning but was only able to push one run across and would fall 8-2 to the Crusaders in its opening game in Arizona. Madonna scored eight runs on 11 hits while the Beavers platted two runs on five hits.

Josh Juntunen (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) pitched six solid innings allowing five run (zero earned) with six strikeouts allowing just one walk. With the loss Juntunen falls to 1-2 on the season.

BSU was led offensively by Justin Huether (Jr., Brainerd, Minn.) and Ryan Johnson (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.). Huether went 2-for-3 with a double while Johnson was 2-for-4 with two singles. Ryan Bohannan (Jr., Goodyear, Ariz.) drove in his second run of the season with a RBI single while Juntunen picked up his third RBI with a sacrifice fly.

With the loss the Beavers fall to 2-3 on the season and 0-4 all-time versus Madonna University. The Crusaders improve to 10-4 on the season with the win.

Bemidji State will be in action again tomorrow as the Beavers will play St. Cloud State University at 9:30 a.m. in Chandler, Ariz.
