Washburn University fights off Bemidji State, 9-3

TOPEKA, Kan. (Falley Field) -- Washburn University scored five unanswered runs through the first five innings against Bemidji State and cruised to a 9-3 victory in the Beavers first nine inning contest of the season.

The Ichabods grabbed an early five-run lead with two runs in the second and fifth innings and a one-run fourth. Brian Gorges tripled home Bre Sorensen and then Camero Kasel drove in Gorges off a sacrifice fly in the home half of the second giving WU a 2-0 lead.

Thom Holiday led the fourth inning off with a double to left field and then scored off a double by Bre Sorensen to center field giving the Ichabods a 3-0 advantage after four innings of play. Wes Joy gave WU a 5-0 lead in the fifth with a two RBI single to right field scoring Luis Lopez who led the inning off with a walk and Cal Iverson who doubled down the left field line.

The Beavers eventually got on the board in the sixth inning with two runs off three hits. Paul Newman (Sr., DH, Durhamville, N.Y.) singled to left field driving home Ryan Bohannan (Sr., OF/RHP, Goodyear, Ariz.) and Josh Silvernagel (Jr., SS/RHP, Bismarck, N.D.) for his fourth and fifth RBI’s of the season bringing BSU to within 5-2.

Washburn answered in the home half of the sixth with two more runs pushing its lead back to five (7-2) as Cal Iverson and Travis Ice each picked up RBI singles in the sixth. The Ichabods put the game out of reach in the seventh with two more runs. WU started a two out rally with a double down the left field line by Brian Gorges. The very next batter, Dan Simoneau homered to left field for the Ichabods two runs of the seventh.

Bemidji State’s Ryan Johnson (So., OF, Bemidji, Minn.) scored on a passed ball in the ninth for the Beavers third run, but that was as close as the Beavers would get as WU held on for the 9-3 win. Both teams pounded out 12 hits in the contest but the Beavers left 11 runners on base compared to just four for the Ichabods.

Newman finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with two RBI. Four other Beavers picked up two hits in the game while Colton Smith (So., INF/RHP, Waddell, Ariz.) extended his hitting streak to seven games this season and 12 games dating back to last season.

Five Ichabods picked up two hits in the contest while Wes Joy and Dan Simoneau each had two RBI.

Brent Vollbrecht (Sr., RHP, Morristown, Minn.) started for BSU and lasted 4.1 innings, allowing five runs (five earned) on seven hits seeing his record fall to 1-1. Josh Juntunen (Sr., 1B/LHP, Elk River, Minn.) worked 2.2 innings of relief allowing four runs (four earned) off five hits with five strikeouts and one walk and Matt Fossen (So., RHP, Bemidji, Minn.) worked a perfect eighth.

Danny Cook picked up the win for the Ichabods as he worked 5.1 innings allowing two runs (two earned) off eight hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Dus Holthaus pitched 3.2 innings of relief surrendering one run (zero earned) with three strikeouts and one walk.

Bemidji State falls to 4-11 all-time versus Washburn University with the loss.

The Beavers fall to 4-3 with the loss, while Washburn improved to 2-3 overall. BSU and the Ichabods will wrap up its four game series tomorrow afternoon when the teams play a nine inning game in Topeka, Kan. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
