Beavers fall to Mavericks in nonconference doubleheader
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University baseball team fell in two nonconference games at the H.H.H. Metrodome Tuesday to Minnesota State University, Mankato, 6-0 and 3-1.

The Mavericks (6-1) blanked the Beavers (7-7) in the first game 6-0, allowing just one BSU hit in the game. The contest remained close through the first three innings as MSU owned a 2-0 lead after the third frame. Senior catcher Dan Bennett (Hayfield, Minn.) recorded the lone hit for BSU in the bottom of the third inning with a two-out double. Beaver starter, junior Doug Peterson (RHP, Bemidji, Minn.), allowed the first two runs on five hits, while striking out three batters. The Mavericks opened-up the game in the fifth with three runs to take a 5-0 lead. MSU added one in the sixth, en route to the win. Peterson ended the outing throwing four innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and fanning five batters.

Bemidji State freshman left-hander Phil Bray (Chatfield, Minn.) made his collegiate debut on the bump in game two and held the high-powered Mavericks to three runs, only one earned, on four hits, all singles, in 4.2 innings of work. The BSU bullpen then held MSU hitless for the last four outs. The Mavericks scored a run in the second to take a one-run lead, then two unearned runs crossed the plate in the third and MSU held a 3-0 lead after three frames. The Beavers put its lone run of the day on the board in the sixth inning. Senior Joe Chism (Great Bend, Kan.) led-off the inning with a double. Two outs later and with Chism on third, Maverick pitcher Ben Kincaid tried picking-off Chism for the final out, but the throw was errant and he was able to score on the play. MSU brought in its closer for the seventh, but BSU wasn’t going to go quietly. Junior Dan Bauer (Bemidji, Minn.) started the inning with a double to give BSU a threat on the base path. Junior Ryan Sander (1B/RHP, St. James, Minn.) grounded out to second to move Bauer to third with one away. Sophomore Jeff Schaper (Bemidji, Minn.) then came to the plate and drew a walk to put the go-ahead run at the plate. Freshman Lewis Bauman (MIF, Colorado Springs, Colo.) was up first and popped-up to first base for the second out. Junior Brian Murphy (1B, Longville, Minn.) was then brought in as a pinch-hitter and hit a 0-2 grounder to third and MSU got Schaper out at second to end the game and earn the doubleheader sweep.

BSU out-hit the Mavericks 5-4 in game two, recording four doubles. Chism led the team at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored.

The Beavers conclude the four-game set with MSU Wednesday at 11:00 a.m.
